Spread New Mulch this Winter?
Did you know that winter is one of the best times to refresh or lay down new mulch in your yard or garden?
Most people think that spring or summer are the only times that you should refresh mulch.
But mulching is one garden activity that can done almost all year…unless there is snow on the ground, of course.
1 – Adding mulch around the base of your trees and shrubs mimics the natural protective layer that is found in forests.
You might be surprised to learn that a good 2 to 3 inch layer of mulch is a great way to protect your landscape trees during harsh winter winds and rains.
2 – Winter mulching also insulates your flower beds and allows your perennials to get a good head start before the next growing season.
This mulch layer makes the soil warmer and protects any shallow-rooted plants and bulbs from severe winter temperatures as well as “frost heaving” caused by rapid freezing and thawing of the soil.
3 – Mulch also creates a very effective barrier to prevent soil erosion on bare spots and on sloping hillsides.
For bare spots you need to make sure the mulch covers the entire area so that each is adequately protected from water runoff.
For slopes, cold is great because you don’t have to fight thru thorn bushes to lay the mulch nor do you have to have worry about where you walk since snakes are not as active in colder weather.
Now that you know why winter is wonderful for mulching, you should take the time to go out and check your yard or garden to see if you need to replenish your mulch.
